If you’re like me, you probably don’t want to spend your summer days outside working in the miserable heat. However, you might be up for a couple affordable, easy do-it-yourself ideas to improve your home’s landscaping this summer.

Keep your lawn mowed

This may seem obvious, but taking care of your lawn is central to the look of your home. You’ve likely seen an overgrown yard and I’m guessing that’s not the first impression you want to give your guests – or neighbors. With dedication to keeping your lawn maintained, you’ll immediately notice a difference in how your home looks. Besides…mowing your lawn is one of the best ways to keep it healthy!

Line Your Walkway with Flowers

A flower bed is another great way to decorate your sidewalk. Choose easy to care for flowers that will last throughout spring, summer and fall. You won’t regret it!

Some weather resistant flowers to consider lining your walkway with include:

  • Yarrow – it has bright color options, is drought-resistant and heat-resistant
  • Lavender – it has a soft, inviting color, a great smell and is a hardy plant1
  • Lamb’s Ear – it has lovely muted colors that complement other colors very well, and requires little maintenance once it’s established2
  • Purple Coneflower – it has a fibrous root system that allows the plant to absorb water and minerals over a large surface area3
Walkway from your driveway to your home

A walkway not only provides you with a safe, dry path to your home – it also serves as a unique invitation to your guests.

With the right sidewalk landscaping design, you can achieve that welcoming charm! Landscaping around your sidewalk is a great way to add a personal, colorful touch as you improve your home’s curb appeal.

There are numerous types of walkways that can lead from your driveway to your home such as:

  • Gravel
  • Concrete
  • Brick

With any type of walkway you choose, mulching and planting flowers and bushes along it is a great way to spruce up your home’s style.

Pro Tip: Don’t place shrubs or plants too close to your home’s siding in order to prevent staining and pollen build up.

Now that you have a few landscaping ideas, you can try one of these styles and have fun adding personal touches to your home. You can also browse Pinterest to get plenty of landscape designs, flower bed ideas and to see a variety of exterior features.

I graduated from Tusculum University with a Business degree with a focus on marketing. 6 months ago I started a new role, Communications Strategist, at Clayton with the Home Building Group. Unfortunately, the Home Building Group made cuts at the beginning of the year and my position was eliminated. I was with the company for almost 6 years. Starting at Clayton in the Digital Marketing. There, as a copywriter, my responsibilities included writing articles for our "Learn" section, HomeFirst Agency, Clayton blogs, scripts for videos and even some editing. Now, I'm looking for a new career as I enter this next chapter in my life. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
