No matter how much preparation you do or how much time you allot yourself, moving to a new home is a lot of work and sometimes you can forget to take care of certain tasks. Aside from actually moving your furniture and belongings, shutting off your utilities and transferring other services is one of the most important parts of moving.

If not done properly, you could end up paying unnecessary bills and fees. Here are a few tips on things you should do before you move out of your home and how to save as you upgrade to your new Clayton Built® home.

Utilities & Services to Cancel or Transfer
  • Gas
  • Electric
  • Water
  • Cable
  • Internet
  • Mail
  • Trash
  • Lawn Care
  • Exterminator
  • Home Security
  • Subscriptions
  • Renters Insurance or Home Insurance

About a month before moving, you should call and notify any relevant services that you need to cancel, transfer or set up new service. By calling in advance, you’re not only helping yourself, but also these companies are more likely to be friendly and give you helpful service.

Additional Transition Tips

Here are a few more points that will help you take care of home services that you no longer need once you move.

  • To start, make a list of all your accounts and gather any information you could need for your accounts like your account number, password, username, Social Security number, current address, new address, etc.
  • Figure out if you will be leaving before any service agreements end. If you are, consider transferring your service instead of cancelling to avoid fees.
  • Give these companies the specific date you will be moving so you won’t be paying for services that you’re not using.
  • Don’t forget to return any equipment that is attached to your accountFor example, sometimes people pay monthly for a wireless internet router. If you’re unsure what to return, ask a service representative and get specific return instructions to make sure you’re not charged.
  • Make sure to change your address with the USPS online or request a mover’s packet from your local USPS office.
  • If you’re supposed to receive deposits or final bills from any of your cancelled accounts, make sure to give them a forwarding address. You can also sign up for a mail forwarding service as a precaution. You’ll be less likely to miss out on a deposit check or a final bill that if left unpaid could hurt your credit.
  • Lastly, check your final bills to make sure everything on them is accurate.

Hopefully these tips on cancelling your utilities services will help your moving process go smoothly! Once you’ve moved on to the next chapter of your life in your new home, make sure you update your new address with all important offices like the IRS, your state’s motor vehicle agency and other offices.

Then you can begin making your home your own! You can hang pictures where you want, landscape, and even create your own unique living room layout to personalize your manufactured home.

I graduated from Tusculum University with a Business degree with a focus on marketing. 6 months ago I started a new role, Communications Strategist, at Clayton with the Home Building Group. Unfortunately, the Home Building Group made cuts at the beginning of the year and my position was eliminated. I was with the company for almost 6 years. Starting at Clayton in the Digital Marketing. There, as a copywriter, my responsibilities included writing articles for our "Learn" section, HomeFirst Agency, Clayton blogs, scripts for videos and even some editing. Now, I'm looking for a new career as I enter this next chapter in my life. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
