Now that summer is upon us, we’re all preparing for outdoor get-togethers, but you may be missing the thing that would make yours stand out–a gazebo.
Not only is it an eye-catching accessory, but it can also extend your living space and help you create the perfect patio.
Today I’m going to answer a few common questions that should be considered before buying or building your own gazebo!
Do I Need to Check the Local Zoning Laws?
Yes, this is very important. All of your gazebo plans and ideas can be affected by the zoning laws. A few policies to look out for that could alter your plans include:
- Height restrictions
- Allowable lot coverage (the percentage of your property with a building on it)
- Restricted areas used for utilities, emergency access, and your property line
Any one of these restrictions could play a part in the type of gazebo you select and its location.
Do I Need to Find Out What My Local Homeowners Association has to say About Gazebos?
Yes, this too is important. When it comes to the HOA, you first need to decide on whether or not you want a temporary or permanent gazebo.
If you choose permanent, then the rules set by your local HOA concerning style, height, material, etc. should be pretty cut and dry.
If you only want a temporary gazebo that’s where it can get interesting. You must determine what their definition of “temporary” is so that you don’t break any of their rules.
What Can I Use My Gazebo For?
As mentioned before, there are many uses for gazebos, but you should at least have some sort of idea of how you’ll be most likely to use yours.
By determining what it will be commonly be used for, you may have a better idea of what shape, size and material you want it to be made out of it along with the location and views from it/of it. Some ideas include:
- Host meals and parties
- Do potting and small projects in the shade
- Shade a hot tub
- Host small musical performances
- Host tailgates
- Use as exercise space
- Use as meditation/prayer/spiritual space
What Gazebo Materials Will Weather Well?
This will depend on what part of the country you live in, but of course you want a strong, durable gazebo so you need to choose the best material.
Wood is one of the most popular materials used in building gazebos, but each wood type is different. Red cedar is very common to use because it’s durable, is a natural insect repellant and can withstand most weather conditions.
Other common wood types include pine and bamboo which are both long-lasting. If you have a solid foundation, then you may enjoy a vinyl or plastic gazebo. Neither require much attention for maintenance and tend to be extremely durable.
